Home Security System FAQs

Are you considering a home security system, but don’t know where to start? Wayne Alarm Systems is here to help. Check out our list of frequently asked security system questions and answers.

What should I look for when buying a home security system?

There are numerous types of burglar and security alarm systems to choose from. The first decision you need to make is the type of security system you want in your home. These include a:

  • Monitored system
  • Unmonitored system
  • Electric current home alarm
  • Wireless alarm system

Other factors to consider are types of motion sensors and types of video surveillance camera systems, both of which are integral components of any home security system.

Are home security systems worth the investment?

When deciding if a home security system is worth the investment, it may help to look at what you value and what you can gain from an alarm or burglar system.

Home detection and security systems prevent burglaries and can sense carbon monoxide, flooding, smoke and fire. A home security system can:

  • Give you peace of mind that your home, belongings and loved ones are safe — whether you’re at work, traveling or away from home for any reason.
  • Send for immediate help if someone in your family has a medical emergency.
  • Help you save on property insurance — a home monitoring and security system can help you secure a significant discount on your homeowners’ insurance.
  • Turn on lights, lock your doors and shut off electronics remotely.

How much does a security system cost?

The average upfront cost of a home alarm system ranges from $500 to over $10,000 depending on the type of solution that is fit for your home. The one-time charges of installation, equipment and activation fees make up a home security system’s total cost.

Can I have my existing system monitored by Wayne Alarm Systems?

Yes. Wayne Alarm Systems can use your existing security equipment and wiring to monitor your alarms. Our team can also reprogram your control panel to work with our monitoring center.

How often should my alarm system be tested?

While most security providers require monthly or yearly maintenance, you can perform self-maintenance checks as well. Aim to check newer security systems every six months and older systems every three months. When performing check-ups, make sure to let your provider know that it’s just a test, so emergency personnel are not alerted.

Smoke and fire detectors are required to be inspected annually. You can check your video surveillance camera for the correct date and time as often as you wish.

Can I control my home security system from my phone?

Yes. You can use your smartphone, laptop computer or tablet to monitor the performance of your home’s network of interconnected devices and systems. These may include:

  • Appliances
  • Electronics
  • Security and lighting
  • Heating and cooling

A house that’s equipped with these interconnected systems is called a “smart home.” A smart home also features home automation that controls these systems with limited human intervention.

If the power goes out, does my security system still work?

If your alarm system includes a backup battery, it will still work in the event of a power outage.

A burglar may try to gain access to a home by cutting its power. A home alarm or security system with a battery backup ensures your house remains safe and secure at all times.

Will my pet set off the motion detector?

If a motion sensor does not feature pet immunity or is not mounted correctly, your pet will likely trigger it. However, when motion detectors are correctly mounted and offer pet immunity features, it’s unlikely that pets will set them off.

Do I get a discount on my insurance if I have a security system?

You may be entitled to a significant discount on your homeowners’ insurance by installing a home monitoring and security system. According to the Insurance Information Institute, you may even get a markdown as large as 20%.

Why do I need to upgrade my radio?

By the end of January 2022, Verizon and AT&T will be sun-setting their 3G/4G network. Because the network is essential for your system’s communication to our Monitoring Center, you’ll need to upgrade your radio to the latest technology.

Why won’t my home alarm stop beeping?

Your home alarm won’t stop beeping most likely because of a low battery or your home has just experienced a power outage.
