Changing Your Wi-Fi Name or Password?

Your security and/or fire system may use your home Wi-Fi network to communicate with our local, full service Monitoring Center and to connect other security devices and services.
If you change your Wi-Fi network name (SSID), Wi-Fi password, or replace your router, devices that were connected to your previous Wi-Fi settings will not automatically reconnect.
What Could Be Affected?
Depending on how your system is configured, changing your Wi-Fi information may affect:
- Security and fire alarm panels that use Wi-Fi to transmit signals to the Monitoring Center
- Total Connect services and connected devices
- DMP Virtual Keypad services
- Security cameras
- Video doorbells and other Wi-Fi security devices
- Other equipment connected to your alarm system through your home network
If these devices can no longer connect to Wi-Fi, they may appear offline and certain features may stop working.
Could This Affect Alarm Signals?
Yes. If your alarm or fire panel relies on Wi-Fi as a communication method, losing its Wi-Fi connection can affect its ability to transmit burglar, fire, trouble, or other alarm signals to the Monitoring Center. It could also affect remote operations such as video viewing and Total Connect
Some systems also have a cellular backup connection and may continue communicating even if Wi-Fi is unavailable. However, this depends on how your specific system is configured.
Because of this, you should never assume your alarm system is communicating normally after changing your Wi-Fi settings.
What Should I Do Before Changing My Wi-Fi?
If possible, keep your existing Wi-Fi network name and password when installing a new router or replacing internet equipment. Using the same information may allow many of your existing devices to reconnect automatically.
If you need to change your Wi-Fi name or password, your security devices may need to be reconnected or reprogrammed with the new Wi-Fi information.
Many times, this can be done via your Resideo Pro screen. More complex systems and video servers may require a service call to restore to the new equipment replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wi-Fi Changes and Your Security System
Will changing my Wi-Fi password affect my alarm system?
It can. If your alarm panel, cameras, or other security devices connect through Wi-Fi, changing the password may cause them to lose their connection until the new password is programmed into the equipment.
What happens if I change my Wi-Fi network name (SSID)?
Devices connected to the old Wi-Fi name may no longer be able to find your network. This can cause alarm panels, cameras, and other connected devices to go offline.
Will my alarm still send signals if my Wi-Fi goes down?
That depends on how your system is configured. Some alarm systems have a cellular backup connection and may continue sending signals if Wi-Fi is unavailable. Other systems may rely more heavily on internet connectivity.
If you are unsure how your system communicates, please contact our Service Department at 781-595-0000.
Will my fire alarm still work if the Wi-Fi is disconnected?
The alarm equipment inside your home may still detect smoke or fire locally, but if the system uses Wi-Fi to communicate, the loss of that connection may affect its ability to send signals to the Monitoring Center.
Will changing my Wi-Fi affect my cameras?
Yes, it can. Wi-Fi cameras that no longer recognize the network name or password they were originally connected to may go offline until they are reconnected.
Will Total Connect stop working?
Certain Total Connect devices and features may be affected if the equipment connected to the service loses its Wi-Fi or internet connection.
Will DMP Virtual Keypad or DMP cameras be affected?
They can be. If the DMP equipment or cameras rely on your home Wi-Fi network, changing the network name or password can cause them to lose connectivity until the new information is entered.
I replaced my router. Do I need to do anything with my alarm system?
Possibly. A new router may have a different Wi-Fi name and password. If the settings are different from your previous router, your alarm and security devices may need to be reconnected.
If possible, using the same Wi-Fi name and password as your previous router may allow some devices to reconnect automatically.
I changed internet providers. Will that affect my security system?
It can. A new internet provider will often install a new router with a different network name and password. Any security devices that were connected to your previous Wi-Fi network may need to be updated.
My internet is working. Does that mean my alarm system is connected?
Not necessarily. Your phones, computers, and televisions may be connected to the new Wi-Fi while your alarm system or cameras are still trying to connect using the old information.
How will I know if something is offline?
You may notice an offline message in Total Connect or Virtual Keypad, cameras may stop displaying video, or your alarm panel may show a communication or network trouble message.
Can I reconnect the equipment myself?
Some devices may allow you to update the Wi-Fi information yourself, while others may require assistance from a service technician.
If you are unsure, please call our Service Department before making changes.
Should I call before changing my Wi-Fi?
You are always welcome to. If you are planning to replace your router, change internet providers, or change your Wi-Fi name or password, calling us ahead of time can help you understand what equipment may be affected.
Who should I call if I have questions or something stops working?
Please contact our Customer Service Department at 781-595-0000 during business hours.
We will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns and help determine whether your alarm system, cameras, or other connected security devices need to be updated.
Important
A working internet connection does not necessarily mean your security system is connected. After making changes to your home network, always verify that your alarm system and connected security devices are communicating properly.
