Ralph’s Story

Our Company History

Security hits close to home for Ralph Wayne Sevinor, the President of Wayne Alarm Systems.

In 1967, his parents’ house was robbed, leaving twelve-year-old Ralph and his family feeling traumatized, violated, and vulnerable.

“I saw what it did to my family,” Ralph says. “It was emotional for my mother especially because her personal jewelry was stolen.”

Determined to give his family back their peace of mind, Ralph took matters into his own hands. He utilized his passion for electronics and his knowledge of technology to design and build his own alarm at twelve years old.

“It was a trial and error process. I didn’t even know if it was going to work.”

Our Company History Continued

Before long, Ralph made a simple burglar alarm system that worked every time. This kickstarted his career in the alarm industry. Friends and neighbors asked Ralph to install a similar system in their homes and businesses. He happily obliged. Working out of his parents’ basement, Ralph established DBA Wayne Alarm Systems in 1972.

Ralph went on to study electrical engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology and Northeastern University while working nights in the alarm industry. After gaining years of knowledge and experience, he officially incorporated Wayne Alarm Systems in 1986.

The business has grown from a twelve-year-old’s passionate tinkering to one of the leading life safety companies in the northeast, but Ralph has never lost sight of why he got into the alarm industry in the first place: to provide safety and security to people in the greater Boston area. He always reminds his employees that the goal is not to be the biggest, but to be the best.

The Next Generation

Brandon Freedman was just fifteen years old when he started tagging along with Ralph — not because he had to, but because he wanted to. He’d sit in on Chamber of Commerce meetings and industry events, soaking in conversations that most teenagers would find painfully boring.

“I was genuinely curious,” Brandon says. “I loved watching how the business worked, how Ralph talked to people, how everything fit together.”

After college, Brandon took a job with a Fortune 100 company, ready to build a career of his own. But it didn’t take long for him to realize where his heart really was.

“I missed it,” Brandon says. “I missed Wayne Alarm, I missed the team, I missed being part of something my family built.”

Ralph made him an offer: earn an MBA, and there would be a place for him at Wayne Alarm.

Learning the Business from the Ground Up

Brandon took him up on it. After finishing his MBA, he didn’t walk straight into an office — he started a rotational program that took him through nearly every corner of the company. Sales. Marketing. Monitoring center operations. Field technician work. Service coordination. And more.

“I wanted to understand what everyone on our team goes through every day,” Brandon says. “You can’t lead a business well if you don’t know how it actually runs.”

Passing the Torch

Over the years, Ralph watched Brandon grow into someone who didn’t just understand the alarm industry — he loved it. The team, the mission, the customers, all of it.

Eventually, Ralph asked Brandon the question that had been building for years: would he carry Wayne Alarm Systems forward into its second generation?

Brandon said yes.

Today, Brandon leads Wayne Alarm Systems with the same values Ralph instilled from day one — the same commitment to being not the biggest, but the best. The story that began with a twelve-year-old building an alarm in his parents’ basement continues, now shaped by a second generation determined to carry it into the future.

The Philanthropy

Wayne Alarm believes that giving back to the local community is a responsibility, not a choice.

“You give, and you get,” says Wayne Alarm President Ralph Sevinor.

Some of our philanthropy comes from local cash sponsorships, but the majority comes from our employees. They help raise thousands of dollars for Dana Farber’s cancer research and donate enough blood to Boston Children’s Hospital to help save hundreds of lives every year. We have toy, coat, and pet food drives. Wayne Alarm volunteers at My Brother’s Table monthly and hosts bimonthly food pantries around the holidays.

We are in a privileged position to be able to give back to our community.
